Babysport! (and other pictures and videos)

Every Thursday for the last few months I've taken Clara to "Babysport." It's a free program from the city of Berlin for children that are just learning to crawl (and their parents!). A physiotherapist runs the group, and we meet in a physio gym in some sort of health care facility. As you'll see in the pictures and videos below they've got all sorts of toys that are fun for toddlers and make watching babies interested in crawling. Here are Clara and Antonia in a box full of beans, with Katarina looking on:

Here is Clara looking through a tube for crawling through before Christmas:

And last Thursday:

She crawled through for the first time last Thursday! Clara in the ball box:

And with Elian in the beans again!

This video gives a good picture of what it's like at Babysport. The little babies sit or lay on mats in the middle of the room, and play with toys or watch the bigger kids. Towards the end you can see the physiotherapist working with one of the babies.

I really love this next video, you can see how Clara comes up with a great idea!

All three of us went to the zoo yesterday, here are some photos from the Hippo house. Click on the third photo to see the new baby hippo!

The hippo exhibit is really fantastic, they seem to love to swim over beside the glass that the visitors look through. I had no idea that hippos were so graceful underwater!

Here are Clara and Tanja in the secret bird exhibit. The camera fogged up, giving us "historical" footage.

In the last few weeks Clara has gotten really into music and dancing. Towards the end of this video she does a really cool "side step!" I've also seen her do some kind of moonwalk, it's really cute!

Finally, here's an exercise for my old German class in Philadelphia, the "donkey barometer!"

The video of crawling babies at Babysport reminds me of a comment my mother made recently. She said she's noticed that there are a lot of kids in the US these days that go straight to standing / walking, bypassing the crawling stage. She speculated that this is due to the "Back to Sleep" campaign to protect against SIDS: since the kids have very little time on their stomachs, they don't get a chance to learn how to crawl. This made me wonder if there's a "Back to Sleep" campaign or its analogue in Germany, and if you've noticed a larger number of crawlers there than here...
