Santa Claus

We're getting ready for Christmas! And we're almost on our way to Canada, so we had to use our only chance this weekend to visit a Weihnachtsmarkt here in Berlin.

Here  are Oscar and Chris at the Weihnachtsmarkt, watching Clara go on a helicopter ride (next picture). At this point, Oscar had already been so traumatized that he didn't want to go on ANY rides or do much at all (except eating, of course).

"I don't like that man!"
"I don't like the Santa Claus!"
"I don't like the chocolate, too!"
- We had to hear these sentences at least 200 times in the last day... as soon as we came to the Weihnachtsmarkt, we saw a Santa Claus walking around, actually being filmed by a film crew. He looked really nice and I suggested to Clara to go say Hello. Santa Claus was happy to shake the kids' hands, but poor Oscar instantly broke into tears (on my arm) as Santa came near. He didn't even want the chocolate Santa wanted to give him (although on a second try later, he did take it from me and eat it).

It has been difficult to get Oscar to sleep since then.... that evening he must have repeated the same sentences hundreds of times. Every time I repeated it back to him to validate his feelings... we figured out that he was scared of Santa. Finally I thought it was time to sleep and when Oscar said "I don't like the chocolate, too!" I just "hmm"ed to get him to calm down. But the little guy insisted "You say it!!", so I had to oblige: "You didn't even want the chocolate"

Clara has been very interested in drawing and writing. She can write her name (they practice it a lot in Kindergarten), and she has written a few other easy words that we have worked out together, like Oma and Opa. Here she copied a lot of letters from the magnetic letter shapes onto her blackboard. In the last line she was working extra hard: she wrote, Oma, Opa, and also "LUI" = "Louie", which she worked out all by herself, to our big surprise!

Clara has grown a lot... at her 5-year doctor's appointment she was 110 cm and 16.7 kg.
