We arrived safely in Canada after a long and happily uneventful flight (we made our 45 minute connection in Amsterdam and so did our luggage! During the taxi ride to the airport Oscar explained "that man is driving us to Canada" and Clara explained that if you wanted to drive to Canada you'd need to drive to Stralsund and then take a ship.
The kids were very good on the flight. Clara had a 10 minute rest as we were landing and then popped up from her seat saying "I'm not tired anymore Daddy!" Oscar was very tired and finished with flying by the time we were landing. When the plane landed Oscar stared clapping. We clapped with him and in a second or two the whole cabin started up! When we were in the customs lineup Oscar said "we're going on another plane NOT!"
My friend Jeff picked us up, and we stayed with Jeff and his family for several days in Calgary. As we drove to Jeff's house Oscar said "That man is driving us to Canada." The kids had great fun at Jeff and Barb's place because their two daughters are similar ages to Clara and Oscar, and they all got along fabulously. There were lots of tears whenever the kids had to go to daycare and at bedtimes. Clara particularly loved playing dressup, and were were amazed to learn that she can already walk in high heeled slippers.
After several days of fun, my parents picked us up and we all drove to their place in the country. We were happy to see that there is more snow here than in Calgary.
We're having lots of fun here both inside and outside. Here is Clara seeing the Christmas tree lit up for the first time:
Dinner at their cousin's birthday:
And playing outside on the slough:
We've had lots of visits with my brothers and their families, and the kids are really loving that. Here is Uncle Patrick entertaining the kids with big snowballs:
The only difficult thing is that the kids have for some reason are having a lot of emotional outbursts, which is driving us crazy. Getting their sweaters, snowpants, boots, mittens, jackets, and hats on before we go outside is always a huge fight. The author of the book Playful Parenting says that these otubursts are normal and necessary when kids are having really exciting happy experiences, but they're still very frustrating. But this morning both kids have been in a great mood, so hopefully it will carry on for a while!
Oscar still needs an afternoon nap, but he fights falling asleep both in the afternoon and in the evening, even when he's falling-over tired. He's also having a real Mommy phase, and doesn't want me to do lots of things for him (particularly putting him to bed).
He really loves watching videos (he gets to see a lot more here than at home) and he's gotten much more use to dogs and Santa on this trip. One of his really funny new quirks is answering "yup" or "nope" to yes or no questions, it's very cute. It's a bit old already, but here is a video of him from a bit before we left, he's really crazy about puzzles at the moment:
