Mr. Independent

I am currently on a work trip in Tampere, Finland, missing Chris and the kids who stayed home in Berlin... time for a long-overdue blog post.

I'm struck with Oscar's personality... how independent or self-sufficient he is. So many times when he wants something, his first reaction is not to cry or whine for it, but to just go and get it himself. We notice this many many times during the day. While playing, in the middle of something in the kids' room, he sometimes just gets up, announces "chocolate" and starts running for the kitchen to go look for some. So funny!

From the last weeks I remember many instances of this: For example, he once ran to his cupboard, retrieved the box of socks, then picked out one pair, and put the box back into the cupboard. Finally, with the one pair of socks in hand he went to his Daddy to get help putting them on! Apparently, his feet were cold...

When eating, Oscar is not locked into his high chair anymore. We had to remove the baby bar a long time ago because he was trying to climb over it constantly, making it even less safe. Now, of course, even though he can climb up and down relatively safely, nothing is keeping him in his seat. During any meal he often just jumps up in his chair and climbs up onto the table in order to reach for example his water or some food that he would like.

The chocolate story from above was an occasional event back from the chocolate-heavy days before Christmas. But every day Oscar runs into the kitchen and gets the boxes of cereal from the floor-level cupboard, closing the cupboard door with a smooth bump of the hip. Usually I catch up with him just as he is taking the bag clip off and about to spill the entire contents of the box onto the floor.

This boy can snack all day long!

Another thing Oscar likes doing is looking at the cars through the front windows. Especially in the evening he enjoys looking out and waiting for cars to drive by. (Also, every night when I used to take him to bed - now Chris does it most days to help the weaning process - we would say goodnight to the cars outside.) I've found Oscar on top of his ride-on giraffe toy, which he pushed up to the window sill, looking out at the cars all by himself.

I'm always impressed at how imaginative and determined this little boy is, and at his can-do spirit!

Because I'm away from home, I'm sharing some really old (2011) pictures from my iPhone with you. The first is of Clara and Oscar on the first "snow" day we had this winter. Unfortunately we didn't get any more snow except for one day in February (when it all melted as quickly as it fell).

These two are from our trip to visit Opa in Dresden (in December), I think. Oscar really enjoyed the train ride and especially looking out of the window.

Here in Tampere there is still lots of snow and it's also pretty cold! This is my first solo trip since Oscar was born... I'm wondering how he will do. Over the last month or so we have worked quite hard at the weaning to make this possible, but Oscar is a boy who knows what he wants (see above). The night weaning had to be done (he was still nursing several times a night and for long long periods up until a month ago) and has helped all of us sleep SO much better... but it was very very hard for Oscar. For at least two weeks he had lots of trouble sleeping and was quite upset even during the day. But then he got used to it and is doing very well now! Only - he didn't want to give up the last few nursing sessions. We were down do 1-2 times a day, but couldn't go lower. Especially the morning snuggle was very important to him, but he also asked during the day sometimes. Oh well - we will see how this goes! Clara nursed till 19 months but was a lot easier to wean at the end, I think.

Sleep tight little Oscar! I'll see you in two days!
