Divide and Conquer

In the last few days, the kids have been less and less able to play in the same room without injuries. They immediately go for whatever toy sister (brother) is currently playing with, pulling and yanking each other's things away. Or else one tries to "snuggle" with the other, who in turn feels crowded and starts biting, pulling hair, pushing, etc. We have had to separate them into different rooms with a closed door in between.

But when they play by themselves, they can each be so much fun! Oscar still loves pushing furniture and toys around, taking single steps sometimes, and climbing on top and over things.

With Clara I had the following conversation yesterday:

Clara: Look Mommy, I have two crayons in one hand and three crayons in one hand!
me: Nice! So if you take two crayons and three crayons together, how many do you get?
Clara (now arranging the crayons on the table): If I have two apples and add three apples, I get... one-two-three-four-FIVE apples!
(Where did she get this "apple"-abstraction??)
Clara continues: And if I have five apples and add one apple, I have one-two-three-four-five-(now counting non-existent crayons)-SIX!
me: Yes that's right! And what do you get if you have five crayons and take one away?
Clara (immediately): Four!
