Travails of a zweisprachig Kind

Perfection

Tonight Tanja is out, so I had Clara to myself this evening. When I was putting her to bed she suddenly said "Ich will ein Kissen Daddy!" (I want a pillow Daddy!) She's never really used a pillow at home when we've given it to her, but I guess she's decided it's time. I found her pillow and pillow case, and started putting the pillow case on in her room.

A brief aside: We have a huge bed, and I always have trouble making it "properly" (i.e. bridal suite at the Ritz level perfect).

While I was struggling with the pillow Clara yelled from her bed

"Mach das richtig Daddy!" (Do it properly Daddy!)
"Don't worry, I'm doing it right."

At this point I was having some trouble with a prickly corner, and Clara said

"Die corners auch, Daddy!" (Make sure you get the corners right too, Daddy!)
"I know, I'm doing it right!"

Finally I had it all in and all straight. I asked "it's all done, is it ok?" And Clara answered "Jetzt ist es besser" (now it's better).

This morning at breakfast Clara said she was tired, and then yawned. I can't exactly remember what the exchanged that followed was, but it was something like this:

Tanja: Oh, du gähnst!
Chris (yelling from kitchen): Did you yawn Clara?
Clara: Ich habe geyawned Mommy.
Tanja: Gegähnt.
Clara: Ich habe geyawnt Mommy.

Coming soon

Clara's first experience with a dentist, and by special request a long video of Clara talking.

This is a great post! Both the text and the photos - especially the top one of Clara by the mirror, which deserves to be framed. We saw it as the German and Canadian Doppelgänger (correct)? in Oma's, Tanja's and Clara's line. When you can get comparative pictures of the three of them at the same age, you won't be able to tell the difference, we're sure!

Heute auch wir haben geyawnt.
